The art of gary steinley
All of my paintings are oil, and most are landscapes. I divide my time about equally between South Dakota’s West and East River landscapes, and I occasionally wander further East or West for a coastline.
Whether completed on site or begun on site and completed in my studio, I have two goals for my paintings. I want
(1) to provide a reasonably valid representation of the place I am visiting/visited, including some sense of mood or emotions that excite/excited me while there and experiencing it;
and at the same time,
(2) to provide an equally valid representation of what it means to experience the place as an artist—to pay special attention to design, color, lines, shapes, texture, and so on. To me these are not just tools for representing places, they are as much subject matter as trees and rivers.
Granted, there’s tension between these goals. The first, taken to its extreme, could be a photograph in paint, the second an abstraction without any apparent connection to the visible place. But that tension is part of the thrill of painting and, when things go right, finding the balance is even more thrilling.
